What's the difference between assisted living and memory care?

Plain words

A tiny glossary.

Dementia
An umbrella term for changes in memory and thinking that make daily life harder. Alzheimer's is the most common cause.
ADLs
"Activities of daily living" — eating, bathing, dressing, moving around. Care levels are usually described by how much help someone needs with these.
Memory care
A secure, specialized setting for dementia with trained staff and structured routines.
Respite stay
A short-term stay — a week or two — often used to give family caregivers a break, or after a hospital visit.
LTC insurance
"Long-term care" insurance: a policy many people bought years ago that can help pay for care like this. Bring the policy — we'll help you read it.
